The residents of the capital call it La Ciutat in their native Mallorquin which is a mix of Catalan and French. The city has a population of around 320,000 which is about half of the island's population. Palma's culture is rich and diverse from it's many squares or " plazas " to the famous Cathedral built over six hundred years from
14th to 19th century. Antoni Gaudí designed its interior in 20 th century.
Another site worth seeing is the The Paseo del Borne. This is in the heart of the historical centre, and one of the most lively streets in town. At both sides it is flanked by narrow medieval lanes as well as elegant palaces of 19 th century.
The Italian influence, very characteristic of Mallorca in general, is remarkably evident here.
The Bellver Castle is one of the best ways of obtaining a true panoramic view of
the city. Originally a fortress located on top of a hill on the west side of the city overlooking the Bay of Palma, built by Peré Salvá during the Gothic period. Its elegant appearance almost makes one forget that it was originally built to defend Mallorca's inhabitants from their enemies. In its interior there is a museum with a valuable collection of classical pieces. |
