| |
Salobrena is situated in Costa Tropical in Granada,
southern Spain. This old white Andalucian town is unspoiled by mass tourism, with
long wide beaches and near tropical climate, it offers every kind of sporting activity
imaginable.
The centre of Salobreña is built on an impressive rock, and is a maze
of white houses making up the picturesque districts of Brocal, Albaycín,
La Fuente and La Loma. Enjoying a stroll through the town does not require a map -
Even if you are not sure which direction you are heading in, it will nearly always
be either upwards or downwards !
At the very top of the rock, 105 metres above sea level, is the Arabic fortified castle,
which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Just below the castle is the parish
church with its Moorish style arch, built on the site of an old mosque.
Another main feature of Salobreña is its wide beach, split in two by Peñon
rock. Here can be found a number of traditional chirungitos ( fish restaurants ).
The summer season brings many concerts and shows to Salobreña, many of which take place
by night in the spectacular setting of the Arabic castle. One of these events not to be
missed is the " Lucero del Alba " flamenco festival turning the historic castle
into a romantic setting for a delightful display of traditional music and dancing.
The economy of Salobreña has historically been centered on the production of
sugar from the cane grown in the surrounding area. Today, Salobreña is a bustling and
prosperous Spanish town, with tourism beginning to feature as an important contributor to
the local economy. Many foreigners from all over Europe have begun to discover the charms
and Tropical Climate of Salobreña - some have remained and made the village their home.
There are a number of golf courses close to Salobrena including, Salobrena golf, Motril
( Los Moriscos ) Golf, and under construction Santa Clara Golf on the
outskirts of Granada. Salobrena has a sports centre and water sports are very popular
in the area. Regular organised walking tours along the coastal footpaths
and inland are also popular, as well as horse riding and more adventurous sporting
activities such as rock climbing. |
