Situated on the slope of Sierra Lugar, Motril is the largest
town on the Costa
Tropical and the second highest in the Granada province. The areas
subtropical climate makes this stretch of the coast an ideal destination to enjoy year
round sunshine and an abundance of water sports.
Motril is a commercial town with a busy port. Tropical fruit and flowers are two
major crops producted in the area. In addition to the commercial port the city also
has an attractive fishing port as well as a yachting Marina.
Places to visit
The historic quarter
It is well worth taking some time to explore Motrils old quarter.
The buildings and architecture here beautifully reflect the areas Arab-Spanish history.
The Church of La Encarnaction is a 16 th century Mudejar building
built on the site of an old mosque
The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza ( the patron saint of Motril )
is a
beautiful baroqe building. Its hill top position affords the sanctuary some
breathtaking views
Beaches and Water Sports
The two main beaches in Motril are Playa Poniente and Playa Granada. With warm,
calm waters they are ideal for enjoying a host of water sports especially diving.
Museum of Sugar
Sugar cane was for many centuries the areas main industry. Today Motril has
a museum dedicated to the business.
GOLF - Los Moriscos Course
8 kilometres from Motril is the nine hole golf course of Los Moriscos. This
links
style course is mainly flat and lined with palm trees, sugar cane and the tropical
plantations. There are plans to extend the course to 18 holes in the future. |
