Spain - Costa del Sol East - Lake Vinuela |
| |
| |
| |
Only 45 minutes drive East of Malaga and 15 minutes inland
from the beaches of
the Costa del Sol lies the village of Vinuela. It is from Vinuela
that the lake derives its name. The lake is a man-made reservoir which provides thousands
of homes with water. No motorised craft are allowed, just simple sailing boats and canoes.
Around the southern end of the lake there are plenty of facilities for picnics tables and
barbeques, all with fantastic views of the lake and mountains behind.
With beautiful countryside and many interesting places to visit, the modern district of
Vinuela lies between Colmenar and the Axarquia mountains. Once a thriving
local industry,
these days production of olives is only a small part of the local economy because of the
poor return from this type of crop.
When the area was flooded to create the lake, much of the agriculture made way
for tourism.
With miles upon miles of wonderful footpaths and riverbeds to walk,
the area has become
a naturalists paradise. Bird watchers can also spot many varieties of bird long forgotten
in Northern Europe.
There are two golf courses close by, Baviera and Anoreta, which are open to the general
public and all equipment including golf carts and trolleys can be hired.
There is also plenty of shopping within easy reach of Vinuela. Only 20 minutes
away is the
large commercial town Velez Malaga and the Coastal towns of Torre
del Mar and Nerja where you
will be spoiled for choice.
If you circumnavigate the lake you will pass a number of delightful villages
including
Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana, Riogordo. Close by are the
villages of Comares,
Competa and Benamargosa. |
