Spain - Costa del Sol East - Competa

Competa is a charming white washed village, situated seven hundred metres above sea level. Located in the Axarquia province just over an hours drive East from Málaga airport and 30 minutes from the coast, Cómpeta is now famous for its wine, friendly Spanish atmosphere and the beautiful 4000 hectares of wildlife reserve surrounding it.

It is an excellent base for walking and exploring the surrounding countryside. The village itself has many cafes, restaurants, shops selling local produce, antiques and leather goods. With a steady influx of foreigners over recent years, Competa has remained self sufficient and is thriving, With around three thousand inhabitants in the Village.

With one of the best climate in Europe, the area of Competa provides pleasant temperatures all year and over 300 days of sunshine.

The land surrounding the village and down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as avocado, mango and kiwi, all suited to this sub tropical climate. The locally produced Moscatel wine is famous throughout the region.

One of the most popular annual fiestas is the 'Noche del Vino' on the 15th August featuring programmes of flamenco music and dance, plus free sampling of the local vino and the traditional " migas " to eat.

At the end of July is the annual feria when locals and visitors enjoy the real party atmosphere.

Competa is centred around the Plaza Almijara, dominated by it's magnificent 16th Century church. The bustling square is one of the best locations to enjoy a drink or meal and people watch. The village is fascinating to explore with it's labyrinthine narrow, cobbled streets dating back to Moorish times, yet it provides virtually all the essential services required for daily life. There are a large number of restaurants and bars, some of them extremely good, more than a dozen supermarkets, banks, hardware & DIY stores, furniture and white goods, paper shops with international press, post office, tourist office and gift shops.
