The Eastern Costa del Sol stretches about 54 kilometres from Malaga to Nerja, the main towns being Nerja, Torre del Mar, Torrox, Frigiliana and Rincon de la Victoria. A very different feel to the western end, less built up and perhaps retaining more
of the rural feel of Spain. From Malaga there are cliffs of up to 200 meters where the Sierra Almijara joins the sea.
The Sierra Almijara was designated a natural park in 1999. Its western part in Malaga province is known as the Axarquia and is famous for its attractive villages dating from Moorish times. It is superb hiking country and its numerous steep mountainsides make it ideal for climbers. It has a high number of endemic species of flora and is rich with wildlife and mountain birds. The highest peak is La Maroma, at 2,080m.
Part of the park has been designated a game reserve, the Tejeda y Almijara National Hunting Reserve.
One of this areas main tourist attractions are the Nerja Caves that are open to the public and host an annual music and dance festival within the caverns. |
