Spain - Costa Blanca - Cartagena |

The ancient city of Cartagena, on the Murcia coast, whilst
less visited than many other cities in southern Spain, has a lot to offer.
Today Cartagena is a major port, boasting one of Spain's largest naval bases. Its history
dates back to 227BC, when the city rose as the Carthaginians main trading port, & at
one time was widely recognised as being one of the wealthiest cities in the ancient world.
There has been much recent emphasis on restoring the citys heritage, with the primary example
being the Roman amphitheatre on top of which the bull ring was constructed in 1854
( now open to the public ). Several other cultures left their mark in Cartagena, resulting
in many ornate churches, monuments, palaces & government buildings which line the
streets of the older parts of the city.
As well as its history, Cartagena can be enjoyed for its abundance recreational parks
& squares, restaurants & cafes offering fine local cuisine. And of course
shopping; ranging from small boutiques to original art and ceramics to large modern
department stores. |
