Benidorm is a coastal town located 40 km. from Alicante, by the
Mediterranean Sea. It is Costa Blanca's largest and liveliest resort town and one of the most
important holiday resorts in Spain, with the population exceeding half a million in
the summer.
Until the tourist industry began in the 1960s, Benidorm was a small fishing village. Today
it is famous for its hotel industry, beaches and party atmosphere.
Benidorm's major attractions are its spectacular beaches All manor of watersports are
available from swimming and diving to jet skiing, banana boat rides,
parasailing and scuba diving.
Located to the north of the harbour, Levante beach is one of the most beautiful in the
city. With two kilometres of fine, golden sands easy access to many services. Bordered
by a busy promenade, filled with terraces, bars and restaurants.
To the south of the region, is Poniente beach. Three kilometres of beautiful fine sand.
This beach is also easily accessable and has a long promenade as a
backdrop.
Between the two most famous beaches of Benidorm, close to the harbour is the
Mal Pas cove, a tranquil bay of fine sands. all of them consistantly have a blue flag,
the maximum rank granted by the European Union.
Located between its two main beaches is Benidorm's historic quarter. This is the
birthplace of the city, a primitive fishing town dominated by the church of San
Jaime. Erected in the 18th century. The modern centre lies on both sides of this
old town, devoting its wide avenues to commercial shopping, hotels, restaurants
and bars.
Each summer, since 1959, the city celebrates the Benidorm International Song Festival,
a song contest where international or Spanish celebrities like Julio Iglesias, Raphael
or El Dúo Dinámico became famous.
Benidorm offers endless activities including a number of sporting centres, tennis, squash,
golf, athletics, go-karts, paragliding, swimming, sailing, motor boats, rowing, fishing
and scuba diving or just getting on a boat excursion to the tiny
island of Benidorm. Benidorm also has a theme park called Terra Mítica
which is located very close to the city center. This is currently Spain's largest theme
park and a great day out for all the family.
For golfers there are 3 courses within close proximity to Benidorm, Golf club Don Cayo
in Altea, Golf club Ifach in Benissa and Javea Golf club.
In contrast to the lively resort, the outskirts of Benidorm are haven of great natural
beauty. To the north, the terrain becomes rough, with sierras and cliffs all the
way to the sea. Within the Alicante mountains you can visit the breath taking Carracal
de la Font Roja Nature Reserve. |
