El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands, situated in
the south-west of the Canary Archipelago. This mysterious island is small and remote and covers
an area of just 287 square km's. At an altitude of 1,501 metres, El Hierro has a beautiful
landscape, more than half of which is protected by the Natural Spaces Act. Some of its natural
wonders include deep forests of Canary Island pines, thousand-year-old Junipers and fascinating
underwater formations which can be seen just off the rugged coastline.
El Hierro is a base for spectacular diving with 25 sites along the coast and an abundance
of marine life such as hammerhead sharks, tuna, trumpet fish, globe fish and black sea bream
inhabiting the tropical waters. There are also many other sports and leisure activities
available on the island, such as windsurfing, caving, and mountain biking.
The island can easily be explored within a couple of days, and car hire is recommended,
to ensure you see the best of what El Hierro has to offer. There are no major man made
tourist attractions, making the island perfect for taking time out and relaxing in the
surrounds of nature.
El Hierro enjoys a climate not unlike the Canary Islands, with winter temperatures
of 18 to 20 degrees. |
