Spain - Canary Islands |
| |
 |
| |
This group of islands, with a marvelous year round climate,
constant temperature, and splendid beaches of fine sand, consists of 7 islands
( Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera, Hierro ) and a few smaller
ones ( Alegranza, Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste und Lobos ).
In total across all islands the population is around 1 million. Whilst they are all
geographically close the landscape of each island is radically different to the
others.
Team Abroad feature properties for sale on 4 of the 7 islands, Gran
Canaria, Tenerife,
Lanzarote and Fuertaventura.
The islands are well served by International airlines, ferries
to the Spanish
mainland as well as a host of charter airlines. Unlike may other parts of Spain
access by air is 12 months a year, particularly as the island proves such a winner for winter
holiday breaks.
Gran Canaria
Named after its extremely varied landscapes with European, African and even American vegetation.
The capital city is Las Palmas with a population of 352,000. The mountain range in the island's centre,
of a height of about 2000 meters, is cut by some bizarre canyons.
In parts the landscape looks almost
like something out of a Western. In other parts the vegitation is lush and green. It is difficult to
find anywhere with such diverse landscapes and even climatical zones being geographically so close to
each otherwith mountain massives, desert land, tropical forrests in abundance.
Along
the seaside there are wide beaches of sand, and whilst temperatures are refreshingly cool inland,
on the beach the tourists are lying in the sun with views
of the island's mountains, very often being
covered with snow.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura, the island with the oldest history, has the longest beaches of all the archipelago.
The capital city being Puerto Rosario with a population of around 16,000 is very close to superb beaches.
Consisting of wonderful fine sand, only a narrow channel separates Fuerteventura from the African
continent. It is a paradise equally for spending holidays at the beach as for fishing.
Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest island of the archipelago. The capital city is Santa Cruz with
a population of around 211,000. There are most varied landscapes: a mountain range with the mighty
volcanic crater Cañadas del Teide, with a diameter of 20 kilometers, and the 3.718 meters high
Teide in its centre. Surrounding Teide is a national park offering exceptional walks in some of the
most contrasting scenery in Europe.
Extremely fertile valleys with an abundance of various fruits particularly bananas and tomatoes; and in
contrast a shoreline offering some of the most expansive beaches of fine sand that can be found.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote, with its capital city of Arricife with a population of a little under 50,000 houses just
under half the population of the island. Lanzarote is different ! Not only compared to the other islands,
but compared to almost any other part of the world .Lanzarote is of volcanic origin, as the other islands
of the archipelago, but here volcanos have been active as recently as 18th and 19th centuries.
Large expanses of its surface are covered with ashes and lava, reating a truly
" moonlike atmosphere ".
Nevertheless the inhabitants made massive efforts to cultivate this land, and today there are plantations
of fruits and vegetables. Most surprising is perhaps the region of Geria, where
vineyards are thriving between volcanic craters. |
