This spectacular Moorish fortress town stands on a towering crag in the Sierra Cabrera, overlooking a shore graced by pristine beaches and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. Mojacar also has its own unusual claim to fame. World-famous American cartoonist Walt Disney is said to have been born here, before emigrating with his adopted parents to the United States.
Like many other villages in south-eastern Spain, Mojacar became a ghost town in the 1960's, as most of its active inhabitants had moved north to find work. In
order to attract new residents, the town's mayor gave land away to anyone who promised to build, and within a year picturesque Mojacar had become a thriving
art colony, and home to writers, painters and photographers.
Fortunately, the town has retained much of its original character, with its Moorish fortress El Torreón and the Arch of Luciana, as well as the honeycomb of steep, whitewashed, winding streets, each of which is sprinkled with shops and stalls and leads to spectacular views over the sparkling Mediterranean.
Mojacar Playa is about 2kms away with its long sandy beaches with plenty of watersports and leisure activities by day and a bustling atmosphere by night.
