Portugal - Weather |

Portugal's temperate climate makes it one of the warmest
countries in Europe. Average temperatures on the mainland range from 13°C in the north to
18°C in the south. The Algarve in particular is famed for its agreeable all year round
climate.
The summer months in Portugal are typically pleasant with 11-12 hours of sunshine a day and
temperatures in the region of 25°C. Many areas also benefit from refreshing sea breezes
which help to keep temperatures down. The exceptions to this are the interior regions of
Alto Douro and the Alentejo, here temperatures can reach highs of 45°C in the summer
and droughts are not uncommon.
Autumn and winter in much of Portugal is wet and windy. However, there are still plenty of
sunny days with 5-6 hours of sunshine and an average daytime temperature of 16 °C. The
worst of the rain is usually in the north and across the Serra da Estrela mountains. It is
also normal for there to be snow in Serra de Estrela, where the ski season runs from January
to March.
Portugal's islands of Madeira and the Azores have a quite different climate from
that of the mainland. Due to their Atlantic location the islands have a more limited
temperature range and are often wet and rainy. |
