Portugal - Population |
| |
| |
| |
The population of Portugal is currently 10,566,212, with a growth
rate of 0.39%.
Recent decades have seen considerable fluctuations in Portugal's population growth and at
one point in the 1960s the country even experienced negative population growth. This was
a consequence of high emigration as many Portuguese relocated to other European Countries
in search of employment and to avoid military service in the conflicts between Portugal and
its colonies in Africa.
Population growth began to recover in the 1980s as the country became more prosperous.
Emigration declined and there was also a significant influx of refuges from former Portuguese
colonies in Africa. At the beginning of 2004 legal immigrants represented 4.2% of the
population.
The countries largest metropolitan cities are Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Aveiro and Coimbra.
