In the year 1539 King D. João III mentioned this beautiful town as the most important city of the Kingdom Algarve, but lost at meaning very fast in the 17th and 18th century due to the plague and several earthquakes.
In the old part of the town there are some culture-historical monuments from different time periods, such as the castle which has preserved only some of its walls and the Roman bridge over the river Gilão.
The municipal stretches from the Atlantic sea up to the mountains and the still very typical mountain village Cachopo, where the landscape of forests and cork oaks is still preserved.
The fine sand beaches at the Atlantic are long and here you can still find a lonely small spot to relax. Also worth mentioning are the two small fishing villages Santa Luzia and Cabanas, which are very popular amongst holidaymakers |
