The ancient coastal village of Alvor, 8 k west of Portimão in Portugals Algarve is
now a very popular holiday location. It once had its own castle that was destroyed by the earthquake on 1 November, 1755. Many of the towns narrow streets now boast bars with live music and different types of restaurants but leading off from these there are still memories of the older fishing village.
The village is well located facing a natural lagoon opening onto the sea. There is a choice of long open sandy beaches or a number of small coves tucked under the cliffs not to be missed is the small cove of Praia dos Trés Irmaos with its
magnificent red cliffs.
There are an abundance of golf courses within the vicinity and well as many other sea and land based sporting activities.
Portimão is one of the main big game centres in the Algarve, offering the chance to catch fighting swordfish and other big fish.
