Train – London to Rome
Just take an afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris in 2 hours 40 minutes, then the overnight sleeper train from Paris to Rome. Enjoy a meal in the restaurant car as the sun sets over the rolling green hills and picturesque villages of the French countryside, then wake up in your sleeper or couchette to coffee and croissant and a classic Italian landscape of red-roofed houses and poplar trees. You'll catch sight of the dome of St Peter's from the train before arriving at Rome's Stazione Termini, right in the heart of the Eternal City.
Fares start at just £59 return for the Eurostar plus £52 return from Paris to Rome in a basic 6-bunk couchette or £89 return in a more spacious 4-berth " comfort " couchette. More comfortable 2-berth and 3-berth sleeping-cars are also available, with breakfast included in the price.
London to Florence - Eurostar to Paris and then a sleeper train to Florence.
London to Venice - Eurostar to Paris and then a sleeper to Venice.
Most other Italian cities are accessed via Paris as above.
London to Venice on the " Venice Simplon Orient Express "
If you feel like treating yourself, and you have the money, you can travel from London or Paris to Innsbruck, Verona and Venice in luxury on the Venice Simplon Orient Express (VSOE). The cost is around £1,200 per person one way or £1,800 return including sleeper and meals. You may find up to a 25% discount for October and November departures if booked online.
The VSOE usually runs once weekly from March until October leaving London on Thursday mornings. Passengers travel in restored 1920s or 1930s British Pullman cars for the train journey from London to Folkestone with lunch, wine and champagne included in the fare. At Folkestone Harbour, passengers are put on road coaches for a transfer to Calais via the Channel Tunnel. Beautifully restored 1920s sleeping-cars then take passengers from Calais via Paris, the scenic Arlberg Pass, Innsbruck and the equally scenic Brenner Pass to Verona and Venice arriving the following evening.
