The climate varies from north to south. In the Alps you can expect long and severe winters. In the northern regions cold weather in winter and hot summers - as you go south conditions become milder.
Look out for the hot African wind called the sirocco for a couple of weeks in the summer that affects regions south of Rome. It could drive you mad.
