France - Population |

| |
The population of France currently stands at approximately 60,656,178. This is 16% of the
population of the European Union.
Unlike the rest of Europe, which experienced strong population growth during the
19 th and early 20 th century, the growth rate in France did not begin to strengthen until the
second half of the 20 th century. Between 1950 and 1975 population
growth in France was high as a result of the baby boom and high immigration. The rate then
slowed in the mid-1970s bringing it back in line with the rest of Europe.
However, in 2004 the new census revealed some startling statistics. The census showed a
significant increase in the growth rate since the last poll in 1999. In 2004 the rate of
population growth stood at 0.68%, putting it well ahead of other European countries ( with the
exception of Ireland ). Given this dramatic increase in population growth it is now estimated
that by 2050 the population of France will be 75 million. If this estimation is accurate it
would make France the most populated country in the EU. |
