A series of initiatives as part of the National Development Plan ( NDP - 2001-2005 ) are being carried out to improve the infrastructure required to make Cape Verde a significant tourist destination. These include improvements to transportation ( air, maritime, inter-island and road transportation ), communication, banking, health provision, electricity, water and sanitation provision and professional training.
A healthy tourism industry is a fundamental part of the government’s strategy for sustainable economic development. Given the countries former relationship with Portugal and the strong and stable democratic government, there is growing
support for entry to the European Union and negotiations could begin with Brussels as soon as this year ( 2006 ).
The major industries in Cape Verde are food and beverages, fish processing,
shoes and garments, salt mining, ship repair, bananas, corn, beans, sweet
potatoes, sugarcane, coffee, peanuts and fish. |
