Bulgaria - Getting There |
| |
 |
| |
Bulgaria is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan peninsula. It is bounded by Romania, UR
Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. The Black Sea washes its eastern border.
By Air
The national carrier, Balkan Air ( http://www.balkanair.co.uk/ ), flies direct from London Heathrow to
Sofia, and there are flights from most European capitals to Sofia or Varna. Many agents operate package
holidays to Bulgaria which can work out cheaper. There are train and bus links from the surrounding
countries, but lengthy delays are possible on road crossings from Romania. Before buying a
return air
ticket to Bulgaria from Western Europe, check the price of the cheapest package tour to the Black Sea
resorts. This could be cheaper and you can just
throw away the hotel vouchers.
By Train
The journey from London to Bulgaria takes two nights, using Eurostar to Paris, the overnight sleeper
from Paris to Vienna, and the direct " TransBalkan " from Budapest to Sofia. Rail information - BDZ

The main European railway routes pass through Bulgaria. International trains link Sofia with many
European capital cities and the domestic rail network ensures access to all large settlements.
By Car
When you enter Bulgaria by car you must state which border crossing you'll be using when you leave
and pay a road tax accordingly. Route restrictions apply if you're only in transit through Bulgaria.
A regular car ferry crosses the Danube
from Vidin to Calafat in Romania. Crossing the " Friendship
Bridge " from Romania to Ruse in Bulgaria is painfully slow, though outbound travellers are not
usually delayed. |
