The town of Bansko is situated 160 kilometers away from Sofia, nearby the river Glazane, right bellow the highest and most beautiful part of the Pirin mountain.
It is located 925 m. above sea level, and its skiing area is on 2000-2600 m.
Bansko is Bulgaria's No1 ski resort, with the country's most modern ski centres. Many millions of euros have been invested over the last few years and Bansko now has the best snow record and the longest ski season ( 15 Dec - 15 May ) of all Bulgarian ski resorts.
The ski pistes are located in two main ski - centres - CHALIN VALOG
( 1100-1600m ) and SHILIGARNIKA ( 1700-2500m ). They are approximately
10 kilometers above the town on the northern slopes of Pirin, and are easily accessible for approx. 25 minutes on the new Gondola lift which starts from
Bansko. The total length of the marked pistes is 65 kilometers. Their location
allows for multiple skiing combinations by offering descents of varying difficulty
and slope.
The unique combination of a well developed mountain resort and a thriving
historical town turns Bansko into an excellent place for entertainment. The traditional Bansko taverns ( called " Mehana " ), offer a local atmosphere and with
their charm, cuisine and
Bulgarian wines. Most also offer live folk music. In
contrast there is a good selection of modern bars, discos and night clubs usually open into the early hours.
Bansko is an important cultural centre for the region. There are around 120
cultural and historical monuments to visit in the town of Bansko itself, along side various shops offering the creations of the local artists and smiths. Original fortified and artistically decorated houses in the town, have been preserved from the 18th and 19th century, built almost entirely of stone, with small barred windows, tall walls, heavy metal-plated gates and interconnected by narrow and winding cobble-stone streets.
South of Bansko you will find the Pirin National Park with its lakes, waterfalls, caves, venerable trees and historical sites. Bansko is also famous for its mineral springs.
