All British passport holders will only be permitted to enter the United States if they hold a machine readable passport. The majority of " new style " red British passports are machine readable, although those issued outside the UK or those not in the new style may not be. There is a machine readable strip at the bottom of the data page. This means that the passport details can be read by a machine at Passport Control. Should your passport not be machine readable it will be
necessary to either obtain a new passport or to obtain a US visa.
In addition to this requirement, family groups will be required to obtain individual passports for each person travelling including all children and infants. Should you currently have children on your passport, it will be necessary to either obtain a
new passport or to obtain a US visa for the child in question.

The granting of a Bulgarian visa does not grant a permission to enter Bulgaria. The immigration control authorities in Bulgaria have the authority to
grant or deny admission, if they have sufficient evidence that the foreign persons holding a Bulgarian visa do not intend to enter Bulgaria for the purpose he stated during the application procedure for a Bulgarian visa or they try to enter the
country in violation of or with the intention to evade its immigration rules and procedures. Therefore, visa holders are advised to carry with them, for possible presentation to the Border Control authorities, the originals or copies of the documents submitted with their applications. The granting of Bulgarian visa and entry to Bulgaria is a privilege and not a right.

The Schengen Agreement allows people that are legally present in European countries that are party to the Agreement to move about freely without having to show passports when crossing internal frontiers. (The term ' Schengen Agreement ' comes from the name of the village Schengen in Luxembourg where the Agreement was signed in 1985 ).

Internal frontiers are defined as the national boundaries between the countries taking part in the Schengen Agreement, together with airports and seaports in the case of traffic to and from a Schengen country. Travellers can cross the internal frontiers wherever and whenever they like without having to undergo personal checks. However, anyone who enters or leaves the Schengen zone is carefully checked.

Once they have legally entered a Schengen country, those who are not required to have visas can travel freely about the zone for three months at the most. Foreign citizens with residence permits in a Schengen country and whose identities have been properly established can also travel freely in the zone for three months.

The Schengen area has been extended to include almost every EU Member State, with the exception of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Italy signed the agreement on 27 November 1990, Spain and Portugal signed the agreement on 25 June 1991, Greece followed on 6 November 1992, Austria on 28 April 1995 and finally, Denmark, Finland and Sweden signed the agreement on 19 December 1996.

A Schengen co-operation agreement was completed with the non-EU members of the Nordic Passport Union (Norway and Iceland) in 1996. Norway and Iceland have also implemented the Schengen regime in full since 25 March 2001.
